He watches her curl up on herself, the obvious shame and guilt written all over her face, and he frowns, letting out a small sigh through his nose. He knew how much she tended to beat herself up for even the smallest of mistakes and the last thing he wanted to do was make her feel even worse for the mistakes she’d made so far. He knew she’d been in a rough place and when Rachel was upset, she had a tendency to try and buy her way out of her feelings through shopping sprees, or comfort herself with food and movies, all which cost money she hadn’t really had when she had to pay rent before.

He pulls out the chair beside her, going to sit down and rubbing his face with his hands as he leans his elbows onto the table. He’s looking at the papers in front of them for a moment, before he nods. “Alright.” His voice is softer, even if that irritation isn’t gone entirely, and he takes a deep breath as he grabs his phone and pulls up the calculator.

“We’ll figure this out,” he says as though it’s the most obvious thing in the world to say. He looks over to her, brows raised just slightly, and his face as serious as ever. “But you can’t just keep this sort of thing from me anymore. If you’ve got other debts, other troubles, anything that you’re struggling with, you need to tell me, Rachel. Living together doesn’t just mean sharing the good stuff. I’ve got to be in the loop on the complicated stuff, too.”

He pulls a few of the papers from the pile, looking at the numbers and scrunching his mouth. “Why would you keep all this to yourself?”
