The touch of his finger under her chin pulled her back to reality and she glanced up at him. What he was saying made some sense, and with his irritations seeming to fall to the side, she begins to relax.
Her cheeks flush as he begins to go through the list of things that she's doing to contribute to their home. He's right about her going out of her way for him. She doesn't do it because she feels obligated, and he certainly hasn't made it an expectation. It's just something that she does because she wants to. She knows that Jesse has a tendency to not eat between performances and so she makes sure that he has easy access to dinner and snacks. She also cooks dinner for them when she can and does the dishes and cleans the apartment. She threw one of his dirty bunched up socks at his head when she'd asked him for the fourth time to unroll them before putting them into the laundry, but she still cleaned them when he forgot.
"I guess you've been able to save some money on a maid." It had been her who suggested it just wanted needed and that she didn't mind staying on top of it, because she really didn't. She takes another deep breath as she starts to see what it is he is saying. He's right. There is more to supporting a household than just money, and she was perhaps an area of glue in another place.
He's also right that she'll crack in a week, so setting up a plan that won't end in failure is a better idea. It's not that she minds so much letting him take care of her, she knows he can, and she loves more than anything that he wants to. It's more that she's dug so many holes for herself and she's become dead set on digging herself out of them in a way that's almost obsessive. Coming back to NYC and living the adult life on her own two feet had been the chance to correct everything. She knows she really should stop approaching things as if it's an all or nothing kind of thing.
Her thumbs start to smooth over his hands where they are being held and she squeezes back. "Okay," she concedes. "I get it. I'm just circling the drain at this rate. And it's not that I'm completely unwilling to let you pay it off, it's just that I was trying to fix my mistakes. I can't believe it's legal what credit card companies do!"
She huffed indignantly as she took a hand back to brush at her eyes. "And while I'll accept your help to organize this mess, I can't let you rescue me. I have to figure out how to balance this stuff and be fiscally responsible, or I swear I'll never get it right. I think it's supposed to be one of those life lesson things." Like going back to school instead of performing on Broadway, or living in a run down apartment for months before moving in with her boyfriend. So it was questionably more an act of penance for her mistakes than a life lesson.
Now that she can see he's not mad, she leans forward to rest her forehead against his, placing a hand on his cheek. "I will never turn down a present though. But might I suggest we hold off on a joint credit card account." She was teasing, or at least mostly. But maybe once she's paid off her ridiculous amount of cards, she'd bring up the suggestion as a real one.
